A language uprooted from its native soil in Goa due to the atrocities of foreign invaders and transplanted in an alien soil of Malayalam in Kerala - Konkani has been kept alive even after more than 400 years in exile, only because of the extreme dedication of its speakers. As part of this generation, we are indebted to our ancestors for keeping the mother tongue in vogue even in the absence of any written media up to the first quarter of the 20th century. Southern Konkani, as it is known, is very rich in its vocabulary, but is slowly shrinking due to outside influences.
This tool is a humble attempt at building a repertoire of such Konkani words and sayings used mainly in the central and southern parts of Kerala. A spattering of the dialect from northern Kerala is also included.
Ever since 2011, Surya Ashok has been collecting and categorizing a vast body of knowledge by consulting a considerable number of people, books and websites. All the words included here are either used by the compiler herself or by the people known to her. We hope that this site proves to be very helpful for generations to come and also for the writers and researchers of the language.
