It is a ceremony in which a guru accepts and draws a child towards knowledge of Vedas and Vedantas and initiates the second birth that is of the young mind and spirit. The उपनयनम was also important to the teacher, as the student or brahmachari would from then begin to live in the gurukul. The उपनयनम ceremony extended to women too, in ancient Sanskrit texts, and the girls who underwent this rite of passage and pursued studies were called brahmavadini. In recent times this is done by the father itself due to the modern schooling system. Starting from eight year any odd years are considered suitable to do मौंजि and the गायत्री मंत्र the most important mantra given to the child.
